Sifnos. Follow the trails along the Big Blue. A dive at each step (book)
Sifnos. In the capital
You chose Sifnos for your summer holiday? You want to see it without suffering from the heat?
A good proposal is to follow the trail from Artemonas to Kastro (Castle). It was Anna’s idea and it proved to be a very good one.
Artemonas is part of the urban complex of Chora (the capital). Along with Apollonia, Ano Petali and Exambela.
Each village has a different character and each one its own beauty. Artemonas is the most ‘stately’ settlement with neo-classical houses.
Artemonas. Sifnos has a long pottery tradition. In the front left, one of the famous Sifnian chimneys
The others are more typical Cycladic villages, with irregular whitewashed houses.
When Greece became an independent state in 1830, classicism was introduced by the Bavarian King Otto, a fervent admirer of ancient Greece. However, it was observed more faithfully by the upper class, who wanted to be ‘modern’ and ‘European’.
The people stayed attached to traditional architecture, which better served their everyday needs, occasionally adding neo-classical details in order not to stay excluded from the revival of ancient culture in its birthplace, as they saw classicism at the time.
